any question as to what happened. they only informed us that the suspect 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes is dead. they had been trying to negotiate through out this ordeal which was about to go into a 7th day through out the ordeal. it sounded like negotiations were peaceful. mr. dykes allowing them to supply comfort supplies to the little boy. supplies such as medication, snacks, such as cheez-its and toys such as a red hot wheels car he requested yesterday. but today although they did not elabora elaborate, authorities say the negotiations started to go south and that is when they decided to storm the bunker. listen to what they said at a news conference moments ago. >> at approximately 3:12 this afternoon fbi agents safely recovered the child who has been held hostage for nearly a week. within the past 24-hours negotiations deteriorated and mr. dykes was observed holding a gun. at this point fbi agents fearing the child was in eminent danger entered the bunker and rescued the child. the child appears physically unharmed and is being treated at a local hospital. the subject is deceased

in an underground bunker. jimmy lee dykes, a retired truck drive history moved to the area five years ago. police say tuesday he boarded a school bus near his home, killed the driver, took the 5-year-old boy at gunpoint. victor, i know you have learned something about the connection between dykes and the bus driver. >> reporter: erin, that bus driver charles poland drove that route right down 231 at midland city, alabama, every day, and every day the route ended right at the road that leads up to jimmy lee dykes' property, the man inside that bunker. we've said as we've learned from neighbors the past few days that jimmy lee dykes is very protective of his property, they say he would walk his property line with a gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other and shout at anything or any animal that walked across his property. each day we're told by a man who's known the bus driver about 20 years, he would turn that bus on the road at the end of the road, just the tip of it, at jimmy lee dykes' property and that made dykes angry. and he would shout at the man and the bus. what we're also told, the

do have a picture of the suspect jimmy lee dykes being released yesterday. is he 65 years old. he is accused of kidnapping his boy and shooting charles albert poland who was trying to rescue these kids from that school bus on tuesday. we heard from his brother-in-law. this is what he told us. it was laughter and love he would have for the kids. he would come in and talk to them. he would say honey, it was a good day. he would talk about his -- he said my youngings. he did. it was his young'ns when he had them on the bus. >> now, poland will be laid to rest tomorrow afternoon. we know they are having the funeral at a civic center locally here to host thousands of people because a church simply be too small for how many people are interested in coming. back to you. >> hey, elizabeth, do you know if this guy this jimmie lee dykes has a tv or anything down there? can he see what's going on outside? >> we have heard reports that there are -- there is a tv inside that bunker. it was outfitted with food and water. authorities have not given any indication that he is watching media report

to jimmy lee dykes through a ventilation pipe. they say they can hear the child crying for his parents. police say dykes is showing no signs of ending the standoff which is now in its fourth day. elizabeth prann live in midland city, alabama for us. what are you seeing activity wise where you are, elizabeth? >> reporter: well, in just the past hour or two we've seen an increase of activities. as you can see, the s.w.a.p. members over my shoulder going up that dirt road. the suspect's property is slightly behind those white buildings, and police have confirmed that they're communicating to the suspect with a pvc pipe. this is an example of what he's using to communicate. 4 inches, this is about 5 pounds, this is a 4-foot pvc pipe. we know there is 60 feet of pvc piping from the driveway or from the roadway of this suspect's property all the way to the bunker, and what we know from witnesses and neighbors is that that pvc piping is also going through additional buildings on that property. we are waiting for an update from authorities, we're hoping to hear from them 4:30 locally and, of c
